I tried, I really did but every time I thought about updating the site I remembered what a pain Joomla is and became dissuaded. I like simple, yet extensible, and I’d categorize Joomla as overly complex and extensible if you’re willing to pay money. This is mostly understandable; Joomla is a CMS, not a blogging platform, so it can do nearly anything. But when you need a complete interface overhaul plugin, which itself needs plugins, the scope and development effort to produce a nice-looking, simple blog is debilitating. I mean, it didn’t even auto-save when editing posts. Gross.
So while it turns out to have mostly been a learning experience, I’ve decided to just start fresh with WordPress. Importing the old content from the Joomla database was easy, the WordPress plugin repository is just as vast as Joomla’s, and theming using the Customize feature is fantastic (depending on the theme). I used to clumsily edit a theme’s CSS and template files, check the results, Google some way to do what I want, rinse, repeat. While I will probably still do that, the Customize feature makes it SO much easier to get the basics squared away.
The one bad experience I’ve had is that the Android app does not want to work with my site at all. While I’ve gotten plenty of rejection in real life, I’m not used to it from machines, but miraculously I found the solution.
